We are not going to go through every aspect of these five stages here, but to focus on one thing that is especially useful; namely, given that each short-listed candidate – that is to say, the cream of the long-list crop – has done a Motivational Map, what do we do with it? To answer this question we have to ask ourselves: what is the key thing we need to know23 about a candidate in order to want to appoint them? What we need to know is: is this person a genuinely high-energy person who has consistently and persistently demonstrated this fact? Certainly, the engaging m.anager is going to need to be just such a person!

Typically, to establish whether this is the case the interviewer asks a question such as:

Please tell me, what in your current position has been your most significant achievement?
